Your password Should not be “Password”

This is Two Minute Tech Tips, I’m your host Lester Steward. In this series we are discussing Business cybersecurity and what you need to know to protect your business.

Is your PC password, password? Or something along the lines of 12345? If so I beg you, change your password immediately. Passwords should be hard to guess. Having an easy to guess password is like leaving the doors to your house unlocked when you aren’t home. Sure, chances are your not going to get robbed but why take the risk when it’s so easy to just lock the house up when you leave.

I understand, everyone has hundreds of passwords that they need to keep track of and most are in a poorly organized notebook, sitting under the keyboard on a sticky note or, and please don’t let this be the case for you, sitting on your PC desktop in a plain text file with the file name passwords. At least change the name of the file to something like, “not passwords”. I’m kidding of course.

If you do struggle with keeping passwords straight or there are just too many to manage, there is help. Several password management applications are available to download. Many are free but before you download anything and store your passwords there do research to ensure the manufacturer has a good reputation.

Also, it’s good practice to change your passwords often, especially if you’re a business. A good habit is to change passwords every three to six months on PCs or services that hold financial or sensitive personal data. Of course it’s a pain to have to think of a password and then remember that password but this just means the “bad actors” that try to enter your PC or service will also have a hard time and that’s the real goal.

On the next episode we are going more in-depth about Multi-factor authentication and some easier ways to use the more secure login method.

Thanks for joining me, Lester Steward for your Two Minute Tech Tips, helping you keep safe in your cybersecurity world.
