This is Two Minute Tech Tips, I’m your host Lester Steward. In this series we are discussing Business cybersecurity and what you need to know to protect your business.
As an IT professional I see it all the time, PCs on their last breath, just barely getting the job done. I’ve gotten countless calls from people begging for help because the PC that held the most important data failed because it sat in a corner and was taken for granted.
PCs need to be maintained, like a car or a house they need regular maintenance and servicing. Heat is the number one killer of any PC hardware. Most PCs us a combination of fans and heat pipes to divert that nasty heat away from the important components inside the body of the PC. If you find that the PCs fans are constantly loud or any part of the PC seems hotter than usual get a can of air or an air compressor, on low pressure, and dust out the vents. If it’s been a while since a dusting I would wear a mask and definitely do this job outside if possible.
Network equipment is the same. Whether it’s a network rack at your business or a small home router, these need attention. Keeping dust away or if that’s not possible using air to dust the equipment as often as possible will extend its life. Having an MSP or an IT department to do regular checks on the health of the equipment and updates will also allow you to get the most performance from this expensive equipment.
Last, knowing when the life of a PC or network component is ending is crucial. I’ve said it in previous episodes, It’s better to have prepared then to panic. PC and network equipment have a life span and at some point they will fail, don’t get caught by surprise.
On the next episode I’m going to try and explain some basics of knowing your network and how to be in control.
