This is Two Minute Tech Tips, I’m your host Lester Steward. In this series we are discussing Business cybersecurity and what you need to know to protect your business.
Remote working has fast become a hot button topic for many businesses. Whether your full remote or only partial there are security concerns to consider. You can’t feasibly deploy a firewall system at everyone’s home office or monitor their private internet connection. So, to get the right type of protections from their home to the secure files at the office encryption is needed and a Virtual Private Network or VPN is one of the ways to achieve this. I’ll go into VPN’s and their different forms in another episode but to summarize the VPN creates a tunnel between two points that is closed off from the general internet.
Remote virtual environments paired with a VPN can keep all the secure files on the business network. Essentially the employee connects to the VPN and then opens a desktop PC located at the business. This option can be complex to get setup and stable but the control over the environment is great from a security standpoint.
Cloud sharing of files is another great solution for security and collaboration. A business would need to train staff how to keep the files secure. This would include not saving the files to the local PC or to an external drive. Not leaving their PCs unlocked when unattended and never signing into their cloud account with an unknown PC or mobile device.
The remote working environment is growing rapidly and new ways to stay secure and work from anywhere will continue to change and evolve. I’ll do my best to keep you up to date on the changes.
