This is Two Minute Tech Tips, I’m your host Lester Steward. In this series we are discussing Business cybersecurity and what you need to know to protect your business.
Ads are everywhere and while there are some that may inform a person about a useful service, like an IT partner in their local area, others are simply tempting you with the biggest and shiniest new device or trend that you should be following. The place where we see most of the ads is on our smartphones and PCs.
Adware is a predatory type of malware that tempts a person with advertising. The software will scan your browsing habits and push ads on your internet browser or desktop. The full purpose is to point someone to an illegitimate site to purchase something and try to scam them out of more money or steal their financial information. Adware can infect your PC when you download an application that seems harmless but comes with some baggage.
The best way to combat adware is to have a paid for antivirus installed on the PC. Additionally, being cautious when downloading from an unknown website or software publisher. Best practices when browsing the internet is never click on an ad directly unless you are certain it is safe. The ad can show a website you are familiar with but may really lead to a spoof site. If you do see an ad that interests you it’s better to navigate directly to the products site to avoid any issues.
On the next episode I’m continuing this series with information and protecting against notorious spyware.
