This is Two Minute Tech Tips, I’m your host Lester Steward. In this series we are discussing Business cybersecurity and what you need to know to protect your business.
Spies in movies and books are cool and mysterious, as a kid I always thought I would want to be spy that would save the world, but no one would ever know. Spyware is not cool like that. Spyware is actually the opposite of cool.
Spyware has several components and can be used in several different ways. After getting infected by clicking on an unknown email link or downloading an application from a sketchy website, many things may happen in the background.
Keylogging is a component that will capture every keystroke on the PC. With this power anything from passwords to credit card info can be stolen. Recording audio or video from the PCs camera and microphone could be used for nefarious purposes or potentially some kind of ransomware. Controlling the PC remotely and taking sensitive files. And capturing internet browsing history to steal financial info.
With everything we’ve talked about lately the best way to prevent malware on your PC is with a paid for anti-virus. Best practice is to be skeptical of what you click on through an email or webpage and only download applications or files from sites you know well and have a good reputation.
On the next episode I’m continuing this discussion with a focus on email spam and spoofing.
