Don’t Click That Email!!!

This is Two Minute Tech Tips, I’m your host Lester Steward. In this series we are discussing Business cybersecurity and what you need to know to protect your business.

Today we are discussing email the number one way cyber criminals access your data. You may see a harmless email telling you your entitled to some money or have won a prize you didn’t even enter but that is a path into your company or personal life.

Cyber criminals will try many tactics to get your info or discover that the email is active. Many times just clicking on an unread message is enough to alert the sender this is an active email address. Oh and good luck blocking these messages once they discover the email is active, they’ll just change the sending address and it will end up in your inbox again.

So, how do we keep this from happening? How do we keep ahead of these people that constantly change tactics to steal your info? It’s a frustrating process with seemingly no end. And the hard answer is, yes, this problem will never go away. So we as consumers and business owners must do everything we can to keep ourselves safe.

One way to help is email filtering systems which will scan the email before it gets to you. These systems are constantly updating to prevent bad emails from reaching their users. The only down side is they may also catch some legit emails and create an extra step to retrieve them.

The most important way to guard against this threat is education. Not clicking on that email to “enter and win $1000 dollars after completing this survey” can prevent many email scams. Business owners, keeping your employees from accessing their personal email on work PCs will prevent a ton of issues.

Protect and educate yourself about healthy email habits.
