This is Two Minute Tech Tips, I’m your host Lester Steward. In this series we are discussing Business cybersecurity and what you need to know to protect your business.
Often, we view technology like PCs, phones and the internet as tools that are only there to get a job done and that’s partially true but with most tools, we don’t usually buy a new one until the old breaks. Tech unfortunately doesn’t work like that, the PC that your grandpa had back a lifetime ago isn’t going to accomplish the jobs needed now but the hammer you got from him will probably last forever with the right care.
There needs to be a cycle to keeping up with tech especially for the business users. A business should have a budget item to upgrade tech every year and a set policy about upgrades and keeping up with hardware support warranties. These warranties are essential in tech. There is so much going on inside PCs and other IT hardware, it’s inevitable that some hardware will stop working, and having an up-to-date hardware support agreement with the manufacturer will save you from having to buy a whole new piece of equipment that will be much more expensive.
Network equipment is the same way, technology is always updating. This doesn’t mean all the equipment needs to be upgraded every year but having a WiFi access point that’s over five years old won’t keep up with the demands of today’s networking needs.
Whatever you may think about tech and its impact on your business, don’t make it an afterthought, keep it in the forefront. Don’t wait until this tool breaks or creates a major workflow issue before replacing it. It’s better to have planned then experience panic.
On the next episode I’ll continue the series going with investing in your security.
